Since I have been asked to feature some work at a local venue, I have revisited some of my best work in preparation of creating some very large prints for display. I think I have really grown since the first submission of this piece. My first take can be seen here
The second is still an HDR but its not as exaggerated.
I will be printing these at 30x40 or larger as a part of a limited series.
A critique would be greatly appreciated! It's hard to see flaws in ones own design.
I was first drawn into this picture by the vivid range of colors. Having been to this exact location it was interesting to see it shot under different lighting conditions and and image capture. I feel that it could have had more impact if it were shot at a lower angle than what is currently is, thus giving the red-rock mountains in the background dominance in height, since at this perspective they appear somewhat small.
I also feel that the trees on the right third of the frame are somewhat distracting and think if they were not positioned there it might be more pleasing to the eye rather than being balanced in visual weight as it is at present.
Overall its a well captured image and pleasant to look at and I hope to see more from this photographer in the future, especially living in the state of Arizona.
I think the writer of the critique brought up some great points. Having traveled to the red rocks, I agree that a lower angle could definitely contribute to an accurate portrayal of their magnificence, and maybe working out the trees and shrubbery from the right side would de-clutter the composition a bit. I really do like the colors and their intensity in this more than the other HDR, and the exposure on this one seems to be more correct than the other. Overall very intense, great shot!
Gorgeous shot. I've seen many pictures of Oak Creek and Cathedral Rock but never one with such a colorful water reflection. Amazing and beautiful photo. Thanks for sharing.
